BJP Protests CM Revanth Reddy Remarks on Lord Ram

BJP activists staged a protest at Bridge Center in Bhadrachalam, burning the effigy of Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy after he reportedly categorized Lord Ram as a god of the rich and Lord Shiva as a god of the poor.

Political opposition flared up in the temple town of Bhadrachalam on Tuesday as local leaders and cadres of the Bharatiya Janata Party took to the streets to demonstrate against Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy. The agitation comes in the wake of public statements made by the Chief Minister regarding Hindu deities, which party officials claim have deeply hurt religious sentiments across the state.

The protest, organized under the leadership of the BJP’s Bhadradri Kothagudem district unit, saw party workers assemble at the prominent Bridge Center intersection in Bhadrachalam on September 29, 2026. Demonstrators voiced their indignation through intense slogans before burning an effigy of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, signaling a sharp escalation in political friction over religious narratives in Telangana.

Divide Along Economic Lines Sparks Outrage

At the core of the controversy are Chief Minister Revanth Reddy’s recent observations drawing a distinction between Lord Ram and Lord Shiva based on socio-economic strata. According to local BJP leadership, the Chief Minister characterized Lord Ram as a deity worshiped primarily by the wealthy, while categorizing Lord Shiva as a god representing the poor.

BJP leaders strongly condemned the classification, stating that attempting to divide revered Hindu deities into economic classes is both fundamentally flawed and socially corrosive. Speaking to reporters during the demonstration, representatives emphasized that Lord Ram is widely revered as an ideal human figure and a universal symbol of righteousness, transcending financial and social divides. They argued that attributing socio-economic labels to divine figures deliberately disrespects the deeply held faith of millions of devotees.

Demand for Unconditional Public Apology

Leading the demonstration at Bridge Center, BJP Bhadradri Kothagudem District President Baireddy Prabhakar Reddy spearheaded the criticism against the Chief Minister’s statements. He demanded that Revanth Reddy immediately retract his remarks and offer an unreserved public apology to the Hindu community.

Addressing the gathered crowd, Prabhakar Reddy stressed that as the Chief Minister of Telangana—a state home to Bhadrachalam, widely venerated as the "Dakshina Ayodhya" (Southern Ayodhya)—Revanth Reddy holds a profound duty to exercise caution and respect when commenting on religious traditions. He asserted that leaders holding high constitutional positions must act with greater maturity and refrain from making statements that alienate or offend religious believers.

Rising Tensions and Political Fallout

The choice of Bhadrachalam as the focal point for Tuesday’s demonstration carries significant political and cultural weight. As the site of the historic Sri Sita Ramachandraswamy Temple, the town remains a key spiritual hub in Telangana. The BJP’s decision to stage its protest in the heart of the temple town highlights its strategy to highlight the issue prominently in the public sphere.

Party officials indicated that the agitation at Bridge Center is a warning shot to the state government. They noted that failure by the Chief Minister to address the grievances of devotees could lead to further state-wide protests. The episode underscores the ongoing sensitive intersection of religion, political discourse, and public governance within the state, as opposition parties remain vigilant against statements perceived to touch upon religious faith.
